Fast Fashion, Slow Style
Fast fashion, quite rightly, gets a lot of flack. Disposable clothes, worn once or twice that pile up in landfill. It’s shocking when you really look at it. Personally, I don’t buy clothes on that basis. I buy clothes that I feel have an enduring appeal and capability. While I prefer to buy from independents and there are high street clothing shops that I actively avoid and refuse to buy from, there are exceptions.
The jacket in this picture, for example, came from Pull and Bear, a shop I rarely go into, but one day I went in and saw this jacket. It is fine-striped denim, lightweight, hip length and classic streetwear cut with patch pockets. A spring/summer sort of garment. I bought it on first impulse, brought it home and hung it in a cupboard for almost four years without wearing it.
That sounds terrible, but hear me out. I knew I would wear it. I just hadn’t decided when. I was putting an outfit together and needed something to complement this ‘ballerina pink’ (their words not mine) sweater by 1 of 100. Immediately my mind turned to straight-up denim, but then the light bulb lit and to cupboard I went! I have been wearing this jacket a lot since and will continue to do so, it has just taken time to become ‘just right’. Some might consider it fast fashion, I’d suggest it is slow style.
