A repurposed vintage military jacket by Ryan Hannigan

Swiss Denim Meets Scottish Tweed

This jacket has quietly become a cornerstone of my wardrobe. Discovered in Ryan Hannigan’s gallery and studio in Aberfeldy, it was an instant love affair. A vintage Swiss military surplus denim jacket, it’s been thoughtfully reworked with locally sourced tweed from around Ryan’s studio, adding texture and place to an already characterful piece. All the original details remain — metal buttons, bayonet clips, stamped numbers, and that intriguingly mysterious button (top row, middle) — while a hand-printed bee insert on the inside offers an almost secret flourish: unnecessary, perhaps, but utterly sublime.

Light enough for summer yet ideal for layering when temperatures drop, the jacket strikes a rare balance between relaxed and refined. The fit is relaxed without being slouchy. Its neutral palette makes it endlessly wearable — dressed up or pared back — and its true appeal lies in its individuality. Produced in small numbers, no two are the same. This one carries its own story, and now it’s part of mine.

Check out Ryan’s work here, but better still, get along to his workspace at 20 Dunkeld Street, Aberfeldy PH15 2AA. It’s a magical place.

P.S. If anyone knows what that mystery button is, drop me a line and I’ll send you a tiny little something!
