The Scotch Whisky Overground, a map of distilleries inspired by classic London Underground maps

The Scotch Whisky Overground

To say that this project has been a slow burner is somewhat understated. Over ten years from concept to fruition,  The Scotch Whisky Overground was a labour of love. The idea came from a conversation with a friend online (back when Twitter used to be useful). I ran with it, tripped over, walked slowly for a while, sat down for a bit and then started with some gentle jogging, then back to running with it again before hitting the final sprint.

I have always loved the way that London Underground maps have presented fairly complex information in a simple to understand way, so to apply that method to the Scotch whisky industry has been both taxing and fun at the same time, very rewarding. I carefully matched fonts and colours, interpreting the style, even down to the vintage cream coloured background.

Unfortunately I can’t make The Scotch Whisky Overground map available to the public, as Transport for London have pretty much shut the project down. To say that I am disappointed is an understatement.

Maybe completing it is enough. Money has never been the driver. The driver has always been exploring ideas. Time will tell.
